My wife and I have decided to have RNY done by Dr. Overcash. Our Insurance co. says we have to be on a DR. supervised diet for 6 months. What kind of diet should I expect my DR. to have me follow? I am unsure of wheter I am going to use my PCP or my Endocronoligist. Any thoughts?? Thanks, Bill

I had Cigna and my surgery was 1/19/05. I did get diapproved once officially and then again during a peer to peer review. The Cigna doctor told my PCP that I needed the 6 month supervised diet and once I did that I was approved. For the supervised diet, I went to my PCP once a month, they tried to weigh me (I was over 350) and then we'd talk about nutrition and he'd tell me what to eat and I'd show up in a month and do it again. It's a hassle but let me tell you...it's worth it. Good luck, Rhonda -154

Bill - I'm with Cigna too and I start this process on 7/29/05 and got my approval 10/11/05 - If your pcp has copious notes about your attempts to lose weight than that should be enough. I had 5 years worth of my dr's notes - and many co-morbidities. Just make sure you have documentation galore - the more you have the easier you make it for the approval committee.
