Just looking for some feedback. Surgery done 12/03, down 100#, otherwise healthy. My B12 was 188 two months ago, increased injections to 1 & 1/2 doses per month and supplementing with sublingual tab daily. Level increased to 384 after 2 months. GB surgeon wants me to see Dietician. Should I go to a hematologist or go to dietican? Thanks in advance for any advice! Laurie

I assume your surgeon is suggesting you see a dietician so you eat more foods that contain B vitamins? Why do you think you need a blood doctor? Jan 240/126/130 (goal changed due to excessive protruding ribs!)

I feel I am eating the correct foods, (protein first, protein powder & protein shakes to supplement my diet) and my body is not processing the B12 correctly - Saw a dietician pre-op and I am following all the rules given - not sure if it would do any good to see a dietician - but, that is my question - would you see dietican before seeing a physician who specializes in blood disorders? Thanks for your help! Laurie

What does your PCP say? These are Doctors, if Dr.Rehnke said see a Dietitian/Nutritionist. I think they know what their talking about, than second guessing. I'm using Dr.Rehnke and I'm pre-op but so far everything he has me doing is resulting in positively results. Mike - Santa on his board.

Laurie, you may need a physician referral before seeing a hematologist. Did your surgeon explain why he wanted you to see a dietician? I guess I would throw this question back at him since he was the one who suggested it in the first place. I don't feel like I can advise you. As for B12, I've been told that sublingual works for absorbtion, injections are definitely absorbed of course, but we definitely don't absorb B12 that's swallowed. Good luck, whatever you do!! Jan

Laurie-Are you receiving the injections intra-muscularly? That is the only way they are absorbed correctly. I don't know anything about the B12 injections-I just know that is what I have been told. My wls has a dietician who works with him strictly with wls people. Good luck to you.

I have a questions RE: B-12 - I am pro op - BMI 46 and @ 301 5'8" - I was recently @ the dr for my results of lab work and he's put me on B-12 (sublingual) is the deficiency due to wrong food choises? Or can there be something else involved? Thanks for your responses Barbi - Naples FL

Barbi--I really don't know what would cause this pre-op. I know that post-op it has to do with absorption issues. You might want to google it. B12 deficency and pernicious anemia are related I believe. Good luck with your surgery.
