Was wondering if anyone has any opinions and/or comments on Dr Marema. Although I never post much I do a lot of reading on both this board and the complications board. To make a LONG LONG story short, if its possible, I have had a total of 5 surgeries to date, with almost every complication possible and still do not have a working RNY. I am looking for another competent opinion and he has been recommended. I have a very complicated case that requires a bit of expertise. I am at the point where my RNY cannot even be corrected due to so much scarring on my pouch and another type of surgery needs to be explored if I am to gain any benefits from this type of surgery. That is it in a nutshell. Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have no experience with Dr Marema other than going to a seminar by his group when I was looking into surgery. He certainly has been doing the surgery a long time and has quite a number under his belt. Does he "do" revision type surgery? I want to wish you the best of luck in your search for a solution. I am very sorry you have had such difficulties. Hope things get better for you soon.

Thanks for your response, I do know he does revisions and several of the other less popular surgeries. Again thanks for your response.

Cindi - I do not know anything about Dr. Marema but from the sounds of it you might want to think about Dr. Gagnor in New York or Dr. Husted in Nashville.

Are those two docs you mentioned specialists in "special needs" type cases, that would be me for sure but my other problem is its a BIG concern that I need to be NEAR the dr as I had continued complications, for as long as 9 mmonths after the first surgery requiring 8 subsequent hospital stays, 4 subsequent surgeries, numerous office visits, etc..I even consulted with an out of state doc *****commended Marema and to stay as close as possible to where I live....Do you know anything about these 2 docs? I guess it sure wouldn't hurt to talk to them as well. Thanks again for the reply. I will look on this site to see if there is any more info on them.

Cyndi, I originally was interested in having Dr. Marema's group to do my surgery. I researched them for nearly a year and only found good things and he & his partners certainly has been doing plenty of these surgeries. One of his surgeons set up practice in my town so I decided to use him. A few weeks before my appt. my local hospital abruptly stopped the program after only a few months and I was back to square one. I chose Dr. Murr in Tampa and had to travel. I was concerned since I have had several gastro problems (every surgery I have had in past to be done twice, go figure)and didn't want to be 140 miles away from my surgeon but I am so happy I ended up with Dr. Murr at Tampa General. While I was there I meet several people who had previous complicated surgeries in the past as myself and were concerned this RNY would present problems. I have not other than my stoma needing to be stretched a little after 6 months and I am fine now. I understand your concerns so if you have any quams about whom you decide to do your surgery, I saw move on like I did and you will find the right person down the line. Things happen for a reason. Good luck in your search.

I can't "sing" enough praises for U.S. Bariatric, Ft. Lauderdale -- Dr. Marema's group. Dr. Michael Perez did my surgery nearly two years ago. This group gives support that you would not believe!! I believe Dr. Marema to be at the top of his field....as he takes on the "tough" cases. It costs nothing to go to the informational meetings at Holy Cross Hospital. Email me if you have any specific questions I can help you with. luvitsunnyv

I am having my surgery done with US bariatric in 14 more days I have met Dr. Marema. He is a very nice guy and one of the best if not the best in the business. His group US Bariatric which has 4 surgeons including himeslef have done over 5000 surgeries. They are the ones that teach other surgeons how to do weight loss surgeries. He is also a WLS patient himself so he knows what people are going through. Don't mean to sound like a commercial for him and his group but there are lots of great surgeons out there and I truly believe that him and his group are the best of the best. Check out his web site usbariatric.com Best of luck to you, Paul

Thank you for your opinion. I do believe he is a very good surgeon and I do understand his practice has done over 5000 cases. I also have found out thought that tricky revisions may not be his specialty. He does not do many of the uncommon type of wls. My case is unfortunately quite complicated. Also found out after researching the my florida dr board website he has 2 lawsuits settled in the last 10 years over 200k. I am sure he is a fine dr if you are having your first surgery as for me I am realizing I need a complicated revsision specialist to fix my problems. I do value your opinion though and I wish you the best in your upcoming surgery. I am sure he is the best in So Fl.
