Anyone having back problems since wls?

I've been in pain for months, and out of work for 2 weeks because of back spasms from..... you're not going to belive this..... LOSING WEIGHT! Yep - the muscle spasms are b/c I've lost weight and instead of having all those rolls of fat to help hold me upright, now my core (ab) muscles are supposed to be doing the job but they are so weak that they can't. So the back muscles are trying to compensate and that isn't their job, so it is straining them to the point of severe spasms. I've seen my pcp, chiropractor and orthopedic surgern. I'm on pain meds & begin physical therapy Friday to learn exercises to strengthen my core muscles. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to "fix" it or at least to make it tolerable??? Thanks! Vickie J. 277/169.5/140

Isn't this one of the justifications people use for resconstructive surgery? Red

Red, I had chronic low back pain from a partially herniated disc before wls. That has improved tremendously! I had not thought about the fact that this pain might improve with a panni removal or breast lift. I'll have to check on that. At this point, I'm willing to do almost anything to get this pain under control. Thanks for the idea! Vickie J.

Vicki- It is one of the things that I have read on the boards. While I am a pre-op I know that my doc told me years ago that my back pain was due in part to the weight I carried in my lower abdomen. He said it pulled on the back and created all kinds of problems. I hope you find an answer and get relief soon. Good luck. Red

I didn't have this problem, but I started doing ab crunches at 2 months out and I had no problems with my back. I had hoped my hip pain would improve with the loss of weight, but I guess the damage was done, so I still have that. Jan 240/126/115 (at goal size)

Jan, I know what you mean.... I still have some knee pain, but it is better than it was pre-op so I guess I'll have to be happy with improvement, not cure. I haven't been doing specific ab workouts since wls b/c of prior chronic low back pain. That has improved tremendously since RNY, now this! I'm really hoping the PT will do the trick for me. Hey there! I am still pre-op as you know, but I suffer from massive back pain every day. Herniations at C6 and L5 and tons of spasms. I sympathize and wish you a speedy recovery from your pain. Kim

Thanks Kim, I have a partially herniated Lumbar disc (4, 5 or 6 - I can't remember which) but since I lost 40-50 lbs. I haven't had the low back pain I've had for YEARS! These muscle spasms are something new. I start PT tomorrow and I'm really hoping that will do the trick! Vickie J.
