I need help finding a local surgeon.
Jasmine,
First, find out the requirements for WLS with your specific insurance company, many require a 6 month documented medically-supervised diet before they will even consider you as a candidate for surgery. Next, find out which surgeons take your type of insurance (this will take some research and phone calls). Lastly, worry about your age being a determining factor, often times that is a surgeon's personal opinion based on his experience and prior cases. Many require psychological intervention before, during and after WLS.
My surgeon frowns upon young adults having surgery without a TON of family support available, he basically interviews the entire family when he makes his decision. A young man who had surgery done by my surgeon wound up fending for himself as his family continued to be junk/fast food junkies and offered him little support. The young man wound up needing a lot of counseling and struggled post-op with his decision about having his WLS.
Keep in mind, sometimes the approval process takes a while and you might be an "adult" by the time you are officially approved and have a surgery date.
Check out Alexa G.'s profile, she was a senior in high school when she started the process and had surgery within a year. She lives in South FL so maybe her surgeon would work out for you. Maybe she can offer some suggestions for you.
Good luck and in the mean time, focus on being more active, making healthier choices and maintaining a positive attitude!
