I went to the Dr today and they are treating me for anxiety. they gave me both prozac and xanax. I am afraid! i read xanax is addicting. now will this affect me the same as it would have before surgery> being that our small intestine is bypassed? I am just very nervous, anyone else taking anything like this? I know the xanax is only as needed but the prozac is daily.

Did your surgeon prescribe the meds? If not and if you have questions about the absorbtion issues call your surgeons office and ask them about it.

Hey Florida Gal, I have been on Paxil for about 6 years due to panic attacks ( the Paxil really helps me) When I first started the meds I was given Xanax and really did not like the way it made me feel. Xanax should only be used for the first 3-5 weeks until the prozac starts to work, it takes that long for these meds to be in your system. I would be very careful with the xanax because it can be addicting and is not good to drive with. Also DO NOT stop the prozac without talking to your doctor, it can be very bad for you and cause lots of porblems if you stop cold turky. As for the bypass, I have had no problems with taking my meds after surgery HTH! Good luck, I know first hand how upseting anxiety can be.

I have been on Xanax for years. I get 60 per month and may only take 2 or 3. They can be addicting but like everything else you have to monitor them. I have had no problem with them hitting me harder since I have had the surgery. Keeping them down has been a problem but that is another story. Good luck Kat

My doc has me on Lexapro. I also have anxiety. My doc would not put me on Xanax due to how highly addictive it is. I have no problems with Lexapro after surgery. You may want to ask your doc about Lexapro. Good luck and these meds do help with anxiety and depression. Hugs, Jen
