Curves?
I posted this on the main board too...
So whats the deal guys.....
Those of you that go to curves or ever went to curves, do you recommend it? My surgeon made a comment that it isn't "enough" to do the job. What do you all think? I need honest opinions before I go signing contracts somewhere and I trust your input!
So please tell me the good, bad and the ugly.
TYIA!

i joined curves as well and i was actually told the same thing by my doc.. about 2 years ago. He said that its not enought if you are extremley obese. its only good for people tht are like 40-10 lbs overweight. That is just his opinion, as he told me. Really heavy people need more then just 30 mins, because once your body gets use to the Curves plan it platues. Like when your losing weight. Just what he told me ...
Hi, I wasn't impressed with curves at all, I had a free 2 week pass, used it but here you have a certain group to always work out with and at certain times. I wanted more freedom to do my own thing at my own time so i joined the fitness center here at our local hospital and I have been very pleased with the facilities and staff. I looked into other gyms here in my area, I used to be a member of powerhouse gym for 3-4 yrs, but I wanted to feel comfortable in the environment that i chose. Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide to do.

I really like Curves! You have to think about tha fact that it is resistance training so the main thing is YOU ONLY GET AS MUCH AS YOU PUT INTO IT! And that is the truth. When I go I work those machines as hard as I can and I kicking and moving good and steady at the rest stations. I feel really good when I am there and especially after I leave.
I think Curves is a rip off!!! They make you sign a contract and God forbid you move or cannot use the facilities...oh well is there answer to everything. I thought they were trying to push all of their items on me also...... I work out at my local hospital gym and LOVE IT!!! Everyone is sooooo...great...
Have a great weekend!

Sallykate,
I started going to the YMCA in June (3 1/2 months post-op) and working with a personal trainer and I love it. There is so much more to do at the Y than Curves. I had thought about Curves and decided against it for the very reason you cannot increase the weights and with the possibility of plateaus what do you do when you need to change around your workout to get results. I am very comfortable at the Y now and have met many nice people and our whole family has a membership.
Good luck with whatever you decide, find something you like. I feel great now and I hated to exercise in the past.

I do agree with the fact that you can't go to differant Curves. It is a private franchise and you are able to get a guest pass if you go on vacation or something for 30 days but you can't just walk into any Curves. I've never had the issue of not getting enough of a workout but I'm also pre-op so I don't know how it will be once I satart shedding pounds. Best of Luck to you Sally Kate!
Sallykate,
It's interval training. Any exercise program is better than no exercise program. But before you go and start giving your money away... I would recommend for you to see if you can start your own training in home. Suggestion: Make a date and time that you would "pretend" to attend the gym. Remember that you must physically get up, shower, dress and drive to get to the gym on these set dates and times. Now get up and do it. Except, you are not going to the gym. You are walking around the block, the neighborhood, the track or just walk to the store. But this is the time you have planned to go to the gym. Money you have already paid to someone else. Now if you can't "pretend" to do this, then you won't go to the gym either. Understand? Make sure that you are ready before investing. Besides, if they want your business. Have them give you a FREE 30-day pass. If you go then good. If not, then nothing is lost. If you are still not sure about it, then get another FREE 30-day pass. Remember that these places need YOU to make money. They will bend over backwards to try to get you in the door.

I think the YMCA and the hospital gyms are your best bet for your money. Plus at the Y if you have to take your kids...they accommodate your kids as well. They have the personal trainers that have seen ALL kinds of people and they have various personalities. You don't like that trainer, find one with a personality that motivates you. But not only will you invest in the gym...but you must invest in daily activity outside the gym for your cardio. So the gym is a supplement to your daily activities that you do at home, whether it be biking, walking, jogging, some treadmill action, swimming - whatever DAILY. Perserverance has Rewards.
I did curves faithfully for 1 year pre op and gained weight! Went 4 times a week! I switched to LA fitness here in Winter Park, started going pre op and have been going 3 times a week doing weights/cardio and have lost 50 lbs in almost 3 months. The cost is only $5-7 more a month. I would recomment LA fitness or something similar, curves just isn't enough to build muscle and burn cardio.
Blessings,
Tami
