Ladies or those who live with ladies...
I need advice and don't want to exclude anyone who might have answers!!! I am scheduled for a complete hysterectomy 082605. I am about 4 1/2 months out and down 72 pounds. I have had horrible problems with my cycles for years and they have gotten MUCH worse since surgery. My gyn and I have tried hormones and the pill is not an option due to high bp so the hysterectomy is the last resort. I was wondering if I will gain weight on the hormones, what to expect from the surgery as far as pain and recovery? Will I still have cramps and cravings and the migraines I get with my cycle ? Any help or encouragement appreciated.

Everyone is different Terrie so it is hard to say...
I am not sure if your gyn has talked to you about saving your ovaries or not but if at all possible DO! I had a hysterectomy a year ago and my gyn/surgeon was able to save my ovaries. I take NO hormone pills and do not gain weight. I have no migraines or any other symptoms of PMS. Everyone that I have talked to that have a complete hyst. and have to take hormones, gain weight. Also, I had a vaginal hyst, so the down time was cut in half. I did suffer a pulmonary embolism a week after surgery and nearly died but that can happen with any surgery.
I would really discuss keeping the ovaries (if they are healthy enough) with your gyn and talk to her about lap vaginal.

Sallykate,
I will have to ask him about the ovaries- before my ablasion in jan 2004 he did a couple of sonograms and my ovaries get huge when I ovulate- 1st one the then the other and they are very painful. The 1st time the thought it was a cyst and sent for another sonogram and the other side was really big and the one that was originally large was normal. I see him the Monday before the procedure so I will confirm with him then. Alot of the people I talked to who had a partial ended up getting the ovaries removed later....

Terri so sorry you need to go through this. I had a hysterecomy in 1985. I was 112 lbs and stayed at that weight until 2001. I have one ovary remaining and I refused hormones completely since I was in my mid 30 & I paniced at the thought of weight gain. (little did I know what was in store for me) I am not going to tell you it was painless. It took me months just to be able to stand on a 80 degree angle from the incision which still bothers me but I have heard recently it is done vaginally now.
My daughter who is the exact age as I was now has a condition similar (can't remember the name right now) to endometrioisis which is what I had, was scheduled for surgery end of Aug. but her dr decided to use an IUD which was inserted a few days ago. There is progesterone in the IUD and she is also concerned about the weight. 7 out of 10 still need to do the hysterecomy. She was told she will have spotting however the IUD should control the large amounts of blood loss, cramping and migraines. By the way I do still get violent migraines and its been 20 yrs since my surgery. Strange thing was I had bleeding when I left post op from RNY and I prayed I wasn't going to start this after 20 yrs. Never happened again.
So yes everyone is different and in 20 years methods have changed allot so it won't be too bad. My left ovary ruptured on the table and luckily it was my bad one. Good luck with your surgery and I will be keeping you in my prayers for a speedy recovery.
P.S. You are going great with your weightloss.
