Yucky Protein Shakes
Hi Everyone, I was wondering what kind of protein shakes everyone uses. I'm only 10 days post-op and having a really hard time drinking the protein. I am using permalean which I have found to have the best taste although when I drink It I feel that yucky sick feeling. My doctor doesn't mention it being ok to drink Ensure or Boost Protein? Do some of you use those? I'm going to call the nutritionist / Doctor today and ask about it!
I had a very hard time w/ shakes for a long time. At first I couldn't tolerate any milky ones and found that Grape Isopure was good. It tasted kinda like kool-aid and 40g in 20oz. I would sip it all day long, a few oz at a time.
Like Kathy said the Nectar Very Cherry Berry is GREAT! It is my favorite unless I am in a "milk mood" then I opt for Carb Countdown Milk w/ Unjury Powder....
Good luck, it will get better!

Careful with ensure and boost- they have a lot of sugar for us.
Try EAS or else you can do carnation instant breakfast with added powdered milk to up the protein.
I never found a shake I could stand to gag down, so I stuck with CIB until I could get all my protein from solid food. (which thankfully was only a few months)
Good luck.
Best,

Of all the creamy type protein drinks I liked the low carb slimfast the best. I liked to make a smoothie with it. I didn't care for any of the juice based protein drinks. Tasted too much like protein,
I got tired of the slimfast after a bit and like Lisa, switched to the CIB and powdered milk. I mixed it with the simply smart milk which has 25% more protein than regular milk. I can't remember exactly how much protein it was but it was near the same amount as the slimfast but did have slightly more calories. But was SO much better tasting for me.

Hi Amy. I'm with Carmen - I'm an Isopure girl. I can't handle anything that is thick and milky based. I also had the nauseau after drinking protein drinks. It does get better. I swear, my body just wasn't used to the proper amount of protein. I was a total carb hog before my surgery!
Good luck!

Hi Amy,
I'm still drinking protein shakes a couple times a day. A couple of people recommended bariatriceating.com and I ordered the sample pack. Of the samples I found two that I REALLY like...ProPlete Gold banana creme, and Nectar Fuzzy Navel.
Now, I was always a chocolate girl, so I was surprised at how much I grew to hate chocolate protein shakes, but even more surprised at how much I love the banana creme and the fuzzy navel. The banana creme really does taste like a banana shake, with teeny tiny pieces of banana in it, while the fuzzy navel is not too sweet and, as a water based drink, is a nice change from the milk based shake.
Nutrition info:
Proplete Gold Banana Creme has 21 g. of protein per scoop. Mix with 8 ounces of skim or lowfat milk (I use lowfat) and you're getting about 30 grams of protein for one small drink, and about 220 calories.
Nectar Fuzzy Navel has 23 grams of protein and 90 calories per scoop, mix with water and pour over ice. I usually put 1 1/2 scoops per 10 ounces of water and get 35 grams of protein for 145 calories. I put it in glass over several ice cubes for a truly refreshing drink.
Anyway, you may want to try the sample pack. It's fairly reasonable cost. Each of the large tubs (about 2 lbs each) cost me 24.50 per tub, so that was comparable to what I bought from my doc.
Good luck
Heather
Hi Amy!
Well I'm another vote for the Isopure Zero Carb drinks. My favorites are Alpine Punch, Apple Melon and Blue Rasberry. I still have 1/2 a bottle a day and I'm 10 months post-op.
As for the milky-shakes, I have an EAS Myoplex Carb Control shake almost every morning for breakfast. My favorite - Cafe Caramel. I also like the Carb Solutions Chocolate shakes, they have vanilla too - but I didn't like that one.
Unfortunately, it's a trial and error for most of us. But do watch out for the Ensure and Boost and such - as Lisa said, there tends to be a lot of sugar in some of these things.
Good Luck!!
Carla
