Topic: Surgery Complete
Hello all,
Well I had my Realize lap band surgery this past Wednesday July1st. My surgeon Dr. Richard Tillquist did a fantastic job. I had very little pain and managed to do some walking around at the Castle Rock outlets Wednesday afternoon. My friend and I went to Estas Park on Thursday (yesterday) and walked around for several hours. Just last night and this morning so far have I started having a sharp pain like a pinch when I try to use my abdomen to lift myself from a seated or flat position. I laid down in bed yesterday evening and it took me 30 minutes to figure out how to get back out of bed. Needless to say I slept last night in a chair in my living room. All and all however this is the only problem I am experiencing thus far. Pretty darn good as far as I am concerned.
All the best,
Jeff

Topic: RE: Actual waiting time in CO?
Just looked through my folder. I filled out the questionaire in May '08 and was contacted that I qualified based on the questionaire in June of '08. I was then contacted in November '08 and had my first appointments with the Bariatric Nurse, and Mental Health Professional (Shrink) in December of '08. I was offered to start the classes in February '09, but had to wait until March of '09 because of work. The classes were a total of 8 weeks and then the surgery was scheduled for about three weeks out. Kaiser has a great program and the three surgeons you can choose from are tops. I chose Dr. Metz and can't speak highly enough about him. He and Dr. Brown are with the Colorado Bariatric Surgery Institute (www.coloradobariatric.com), the third surgeion is Dr. Chae at the National Bariatric Center (www.nationalbariatrics.com). You could actually start your research now if you want by going to their websites and attending their free seminars. You should do this eventually anyway to select your surgeon . I attended seminars with Dr. Chae and Dr. Metz. Again, good luck with your surgery.

Yes, I am Kaiser...so I guess that'll be about right. Once you got the approval letter/ packet/ DVD....how long was it before someone contacted you to start the next steps? Basically, I'm in limbo now, correct?
Thanks for replying...even though I wanted to hear that it would be much sooner than the warned....I'm very thankful for a realistic idea of how long. I've never been so impatient & READY for something in all of my life!
Anyways, thanks again!

If you happen to be a Kaiser patient, that's about right. I was referred by my PCP in April of '08, got my approval in November of '08 and was banded on June 15th. I had to pospone my mandatory classes for a month due my work schedule so I could have been a bit sooner, but not much.
Good luck with your journey!

Yahooo hoooooo! I got my YES letter in the mail today! It's the BEST piece of mail I've EVER EVER recieved! The weight mgmt clinic said that the wait time was about 6-8 months for surgery........wow! I know I didn't put the weight on overnight.....but goodness it seems so far away!
Does anyone know if that if the accurate waiting time for the Denver area? Or, is that what they say to prepare for the worst case scenario?
Anybodys advice who has been a t this stage, would be greatly appreciated!

Well you should be recovering now since it's Tues. Hope all went well for you. I will see you tomorrow in the hospital if you are still there when I am. I volunteer at Rose in the Bariatrics and visit folks in the hospital. Looking forward to meeting you. Lori
Topic: RE: Consults Complete!
Hi Mishelle!
I made my appointment with Dr. Snyder the day after the seminar, so May 22nd and since the appt was scheduled on 8 July, I went ahead and called my insurance company to make sure that the docs my surgeons website recommended were covered; I went ahead and made all those appts and I am all done with that! I even had my NP do the bloodwork he requests (I am sure more will be done!) but I wanted a complete file for when I meet with him.
I have all my consults done and I am waiting until next Wednesday to meet with Dr. Snyder! I am really excited!!!
I will let ya know how the consult goes, too. I am hoping for a quick approval and then surgery, and back to work! :)
Cheers,
Megan

Topic: Catch that Pie!
During one of our ER visits, when I was sick with the fish blockage, Lilith started telling us that she was hungry. I asked the Emergency Room Triage nurse if she thought we had time to go to the cafeteria before they called me back and she assured me that we did so off to the cafeteria we went.
One of the things that I have noticed, (even pre surgery this was always something that bothered me), at almost EVERY hospital that I have ever worked at, (except Porter Adventist in Littleton, Colorado because back in the day it served a vegan menu), is how UNHEALTHY the menu is at their cafeterias! My current hospital is no exception. Granted they have a wonderful salad bar but they also have a freezer with ice cream novelties and a huge rack of candy and snacks right next to the registers. They also have the revolving, lighted tower of deserts! Oh, yes, this thing is as tall as me and as big around as I probably once was (and could easily be again if I ever dared to start opening the tower door and started partaking of the calorie laden goodies inside!). Lilith had never seen anything like it. She was entranced. Especially entranced by a huge meringue (I am sure she thought it was whipped cream which she loves)covered piece of lemon pie. She watched it with wide eyed wonder as it circled round and round on the shelf that was just at her eye level. Then she turns excitedly to me and says, "Momma get it get it!", as it was coming around again. In my dehydrated and drug filled state I didn't know what she was talking about at first. "Catch it Mama! Catch it! There Mama!" She exclaimed pointing and jumping up and down! I started trying to think of a way to tell he that she probably wouldn't like it because she has never had lemon pie or meringue and how it was not appropriate to have pie for dinner, etc etc, when she saw the handle on the case and opened it and tried to "catch" the slice of pie herself.
