Did anyone out there not tell people about their surgery? I didn't tell my employer about RNY surgery. I kind of fibbed about the type of surgery I will be having This is a two part question: 1) How much time can I expect to be out of work? 2) Did anyone else not tell certain people about their surgery? Any advice???

I told everyone. I had no shame.

I could have returned to work in a week. But because of other reasons, (family) I missed a month.

I told everyone, & it was unbelievable how much support I received.  For me, at age 61, I needed the full 6 weeks off work.   I probably could have worked sooner, but I really paid attention to my "mini-meals" and I took naps almost daily.

Hi!  I told everyone!  LOL  I was so excited, and still am!  Because of medical privacy laws I told my boss that if anyone inqired about me, and I knew they would due to my job, she had my persmission to tell people.  I hoped that maybe I'd be an inspiration to even one person...I had the option of being out a total of 6 weeks, so I took all 6.

I also "fibbed" about my surgery to my employer. I told them I was having "abdominal" surgery...you know by law...they can't even ask you. Anyway...it was a very private thing for me at the time. I worked at the time for a very professional company and really was only close with a couple of coworkers. I told them, but they totally understood why I was not telling management. It worked out well for me. Also, I told my employer that I needed 6-8 weeks off (the normal for any serious surgery) and I took the 8 weeks. This is your decision..and only yours...you tell who you feel comfortable telling. Good luck to you...

BIG Hugs,
Lisa

My boss was actually the first person I told when I made the decision!  LOL! I've been very up-front about having the surgery; whenever someone says "You've lost a lot of weight!", I immediately tell them "Oh, thanks!  I had gastric bypass surgery!" I just didn't want to experience the "Star Jones" thing, where you lose a lot of weight and EVERYBODY'S speculating (aka: gossiping about) how you did it.  I think there tends to be less gossip when people know rather than when they THINK they know!  But it's a very personal thing; if you don't want to tell people, don't!  It's your business! Oh, I was out for 3 weeks.  I probably could have gone back after two, but I would have been very tired.  Good luck!

I told everyone. My boss and co-workers were all very supportive although they did have a level of fear for me but only because it is major surgery and they actually care.  I took 1.5 weeks off work. I have a desk job and the first half week back I didn't work full 8 hour days. I also made sure to get up and walk for 5 minutes out of EVERY hour. It worked well. Good luck to  you. Sue

I don't have a date yet---so not sure how I am going to handle it----but so far---no I am not telling my employer---- they wouldn't be supportive---- and I do have a hard time getting any tim off work!  I'll probably just tell them I need gall bladder surgery------after I get my date... I am not telling anyone really but a few close friends that will help me with rides and stuff----I feel like so many people have seen me try "one more diet"  and I just don't want to be watched that closesly! maybe after a 100##'s or so.... but you know------it's just personal and quiet for me---and once you tell a few people..... we know what happens! Best luck with your stuation.......hope it's more supportive than mine! ~Lori

Hi, My DS is scheduled (tentatively) for May16.  I have not told my employer yet.  I have only been with them a couple of months and just started a new position today.  I was afraid I wouldn't get the position if they knew about my upcoming surgery.  I am hoping to only be out a couple of weeks.  I work only 4 hours a day.  A vacation request requires only 1 week notice so I will wait another week or so. A couple of weeks for an open procedure ? seems a bit short, I would bet more on 4-6. Crookes doesn't do the DS any way but open. good luck
