Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency

There was a newspaper article in todays Huntsville Times about Micheal Jackson having Alpha 1 Antitrypsin deficiency. That is the disease my husband had. It is a hererity disease. The way genetic specialist explained it to us is when a child is formed it gets a cell from it mother and a cell from the father. Both of my husbands parents were "carriers" they each had a good cell and a bad cell. There was 6 children in the family and some got a good cell from each. Some got a good and a bad, so they weren't affected to badly but were capible of passing it on to their children. My husband was the only one in the family to get a bad cell from each parent. It caused him to have pneumonia repeatedly. He was in the hospital 10 times one year with pneumonia. The pneumonia damaged his lung, which in turn caused heart failure, the steroids ruined his bones, the medications destroyed his liver. The antibotics he took for so long caused cancer.
It is extremely rare.
I know most of you aren't interested in any of this but a few who care about me are.
I don't care for Micheal Jackson, never have and don't guess I ever will but I hate to here of anybody having to go thru this disease. But at least he's got the money for good medical care.

This is very interesting..  never heard of this disease!!

I have never heard of this illness but as a nurse, I do like to increase my medical knowledge. Thanks for sharing.

I use to be a huge Michael Jackson fan... I am a fan of anyone who can manage to stay on top for as many years as he has. Most stars appear and burn out but not him. I am not a fan of some of the things that he is rumored to have done in his private life but that has nothing to do with his professional side.

I haven't read this article yet or the paper.  I am interested in information of a medical nature because who knows when I will need it.  At least it is helpful to pass it along to someone else who might have a problem but don't know what it is.  You may just sent someone to the phone for an appointment to check out a problem they are having.
