I am post op, 3/11/04 and have been smelling cigerette smoke for about 2 months. I was told that this could be the toxins in my fat cells being released from when I was a heavy smoker. Anyone else experience this?? I am not married to a smoker and yet I smell it in my house, car, etc as if someone is smoking right in front of me. Help!! I did some internet research and all I can come up with is Neurological disorders. I am wondering if there is a link to gastric bipass and dramatic fat loss. Thanks!

Jacqueline - I have had the same exact experience but I wasn't sure why I was smelling this. That makes sense to me that it's the stuff being released from our fat. I quit smoking 6 years ago but still on occasion I smell stale cigarette smoke....like I spent a night at Denny's and came out smelling of smoke. I never equated it with the weight loss though because I've had that smell before the surgery as well. Come to think of it, it might have most likely been when I was dieting though... Dina

Jacquline... Untill i read your post I thought it was just me... or that I was around someone somewhere that I did not realize was smiking! this has not happened to me in the past few weeks but it did happen a few times. So maybe even though I am not a smoker,,, I have always been around smokers in my family ,,, as we realease "old" fat we are getting rid of more tonixs in our body.... Just another healthy responce of our WLS? Anyway i am glad that I dont smell it anymore. -KIM -109

oh my god! my surgery was on 3/9/04 and i smell cigarettes all the time (i haven't smoked since the first of feb). i thought it was just me - well, actually i've been blaming it on the neighbors in the upstairs apartment, but i don't even know if they smoke (and, the rest of my family can't even smell it). how very strange. ???

All I can say is "wow". I've always been a non-smoker because both of my parents did it enough for our whole family for a lifetime. I certainly don't preach or criticize smokers, but heck if the toxins stay in our bodies long enough to smell them when losing weight years later...I'm just really glad I've never started that bad habit. I wish all of you the best Lissa
