Rob is transferred!
Hi everyone,
On Friday Rob was transferred from Seattle to our little home town hospital in Anacortes. It was a very happy day indeed. I stayed with him in the hospital all weekend. He is doing very well, all things considered. His strength and mobility is improving every day. He will be in this hospital until at least after the 4th of July weekend. Then, depending on how mobile he is, he can go home to his mom's house (which is all on one level).
He feels anxious a lot. I hope that will fade away as he becomes more mobile and independent.
I had a shock this weekend as I was present for the first time when they changed his dressing on the bed sore. It is an actual hole or cavity in his body. I thought I was going to faint! Then the nurses asked me to take a polaroid of it so they could compare as it heals (they were gloved and I was not). Well, I managed to take the picture and go sit down and not faint. Then the nurse showed me where new muscle tissue is growing, so that made me feel a little better. He has what is called a "wound vac" attached to the bandage on the bed sore. It vacuums the moisture and dead tissue out of the wound and helps it heal. I affectionately call it the "butt sucker." So I got an education in what happens if you lay in bed too much. I can see now that he definitely will need plastic surgery.
Back to the good things: the hospital is only two blocks from my workplace so I can go have "picnic" lunch with him every day. Isn't that just so cool after all this time?
This week Rob will be getting into the routine of this hospital and starting their physical therapy program. He is eating solid food now. He still gets extra protein through a tube to his old stomach to help heal the bed sore. So right now Rob is eating from both stomachs!
Note to Rob's Angel Joy: sorry we missed your call! I hope we can hook up via phone soon.
Kat

Kat,
Wonderful news indeed!!! Enjoy your time together. I can only imagine how happy you must be having him so close again. I know how I would feel if it were my husband. It sounds like Rob is getting closer to the final stages of this dreadful hospital stay each day, hurray for our caboose!!!!!! Chugga-Chugga-Choo-Choo, hurry back Rob, we need you!!!! (hows that for a little cheer?) Take care, Janelle
Kat - sounds like things are really moving along for our caboose! I'm so happy for you and for him. I know you are so relieved to have him close to you and knowing he's on the fast track to getting moved to his mom's house. Leave it to our Caboose to be eating from both stomachs! Ihope his sore gets better soon - doesn't sound like too much fun for him (or you!).
Thanks so much for keeping us updated. We are all certainly grateful for your committment to Rob and to us. God bless you!
-Wendy
Rob is SO blessed to have you, Kat!! The protein will make a huge difference to his healing. I'm sorry his back side is in such a state, but no matter how bad it is, it is minor compared to what he has been through. I hope it continues to heal well.
I'm glad that he is close to you now. That has to ease your burden, and Dorothy's a bit. I'm still praying for all of you!! We will catch up soon..
Joy
