Am I the only one who vomits due to stupidity?

Hi. This is my first post on this page. I have been on regular foods for about 3 weeks, and I have thrown up at least every other day since then. I've had problems with vitamins (both chewable and capsules) coming back up. I've eaten too quickly and lost things, and I've eaten too much and vomited. I stick basically to protein but am not having much luck with meat. My appetite has bottomed out due to all this, but I'm not complaining. Old eating habits are hard to break, I guess. I ate way too fast and too much my whole life, so it's a learning process. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem. Carla

I am six and a half weeks post op, and have lost my dinner four times -- twice due to lactose intolerance, and the other two were plain stupidity. I ate one bite too many, and had to get it out!!! It hurts. It's a lesson learned, I guess.

Carla, I am in the same boat as you are. Everything went fine as long as I limited my intake to a liquid diet. When I began adding regular food my stomach was always upset, I had a significant amount of "burping," and I regularly threw up some if not all of what I ate. My doctor is doing a variety of tests to try to find a physical reason for these problems, but we have found nothing as of yet. I don't believe that it is due to eating too fast or failing to chew properly. Many times I have given very careful attention to eating "correctly" with the same results. At the moment, I eat one meal a day of less than 4 ounces. But, I figure, this too will eventually correct itself. Hang in there! Ron

No, you're not the only one! I've gotten sick now 4 times in my 2 months since surgery. Not too bad, overall. The first time was a total surprise since I was slowly eating won-ton soup. Still can't figure out what I did wrong there, but I lost it! The second time I was at Sam's wholesale club blindly eating sample goodies and then BOOM! I had to make a bee-line to the restrooms! The third time, I ate some pistachios, and without even thinking, I took a big swig of iced tea. THAT didn't take long to come back up! The last time was on Mother's Day - had some steak at my parent's house that wasn't too tender. It just sat there for a long time, then finally came back up. UGH! So, yes - I've been stupid. It's a learning process. Sometimes I plain forget that I've been altered! It's going to be an ongoing battle for me, I think! Hang in there - it'll get better I'm sure! Meat is not my friend - I've tried just about everything and nothing is really "doing it for me!". I ate frito pie for dinner last night (wolf brand lean chili w/ fritos and cheese) and that really hit the spot for some reason! I know it wasn't the healthiest meal, but I got my protein in and I kept it down and (more importatnly!) I was satisfied. Glad you posted! -Wendy

Hey I'm with ya! I too do the eat too fast /too much and yack from that. I was always the last one to finish eating, I mean everybody was waiting on me so I thought I would be good with slow eating after surgery. You know what they say though right? That's what I get for doing my own thinking! My vitamins go down real well and have never came back up. I get this trapped air thing happening all the time. It seems that my pouch fills with air and then when I eat the food goes into the pouch and the air comes up. That's normal. The pain doesn't usually hit until like the third bite and then BAM! There's a pocket of air (I call it my Bubble) right between my breasts that feels about the size of a big shoe! Oh and HURT! Boy does it ever hurt! What happens then is that any food that went down on top of that bubble stays on top of it. I can try my heart out to burp but all that happens is that as the bubble rises it pushes the food up too. Like the air and food don't change places. From there it's yak city. There's no way around it. Well actually there is one. I have found (quite by accident) that if I get up and walk the bubble seems to just burst out. More than one and it has a tendancy to be real embarrassing. I have heard that some wls people have a tendancy to fart. Not me. I have become the belch queen! My husband told me that if awards were given for belching I'd take the cup! I spent about two weeks yaking on 95% of what I ate and so I called my surgeon. He was under the impression that I may have had a partial blockage and told me to make a kind of tea with meat tenderizer (attacks and breaks down the protiens in your stomach) with about a teaspoon of the tenderizer in 8 oz. of water. Worked like a charm and I've only yaked since due to the bubble thing which I'm also learning to control. Oh and he said to go back to liquids for a week. You might want to contact your surgeon and see what he thinks.... that's all I have for now, (and it was plenty!) take care, good, luck, love and hugs, Gayle

I just thought you'd like to know that my dd who had wls 2 years ago had your same problem. It stopped after a while and she no longer has the belching and bubble problem. She went from 286 to 132 and looks gorgeous. Louise-33

carla...i have had quite a few meals come back up--no fun--and they always tasted better the first trip! there doesn't seem to always be a pattern- some days it's from one bite too many and some from eating too fast-- and gayle--oh my what i would give to be able to burp---i don't get it out either end so it just stays trapped! um--okay--that's maybe too much information!

Carla, If it's any consolation yes...I've thrown up several times since I've started eating solid foods again. And yes...they were all due to the speed I stuffed the food down my throat. I'm actually happy that this surgery works the way it does...it had to be something THIS RADICAL to get me out of the really bad habits I had. I'm finally getting it...figuring out how slow I have to eat and how full my fork can be. It's a learning process...and as you can see for the number of responses you've got, YOU ARE NOT ALONE Take care! Paola

I too have had trouble with vomiting. It started in the 2nd week and has not let up. The longest I have gone is one week without losing it. I lost dinner tonight about 40 minutes after I ate. I can only chalk it up to eating too fast or not chewing enough. I am concentrating on chewing so I now need to slow down. I also think I ate too much. Slowing down will help me to realize it. My surgeon said if I keep some food down, then the problem is with me. If I keep no food down then the problem becomes his to correct. Check with your surgeon if you keep having problems.
