Hey all! I am having problems with energy, and I think it might be PCOS related. Since my wls on 3/29/04, I haven't taken any Glucophage XR because my surgeon said I didn't need it anymore (the pills, 500mg/ea., are HUGE); however, my weight loss is very slow, and since I returned to work, I have as little energy as I did pre-op. BTW, I'm getting in my vitamins and protein. So... does anyone here post-op have PCOS? How are you dealing with it? TIA for any help! Hugs, -Marcie 275/248/135

Marcie, I have PCOS as well. I stopped taking my Glucophage XR (1500mgs) and Actos (40 mgs), both once daily, prior to surgery and started again about 3 weeks after. I didnt have any problems going back on it. I took it for about 1 month and then my Endocrinoligist wanted to see how I did off it. So far I notice any difference either way, on or off. I have not had the fatigue at all. I did loose more steadily while I was on it that month though, but I couldnt say for sure whether that was the meds or just the way I lost that month. If you think it would help maybe you can give it a try, but I would ask my Dr before just starting on your own. The one thing I did notice while being off was that I have more ovary pain that seems to be hanging on longer so I would assume the cysts are coming back with a vengence. I only have my left ovary and I know when it is doing something funky because it hurts like yazdah!!!! So if I made the decisions to go back on it, it would defintely be because of the ovary pain, more than the weight loss. I have been happy with my loss so far, -62 lbs since March 1st. HTH-Best wishes! Janelle

Marcie It appears we have a lot in common. I had surgery on the same date as you did, also have PCOS, as well as insulin resistence. I occasionaly have problems with lack of energy but I find the more I walk or excercise the more energy I gain. My DH is constantly saying energy begets energy(thats what you get for marying a nuclear enginer). My endo took me off the glucophage (1500)XR a week before my surgery and she told me I will never take it again. So far everything appears to be going well other that I skiped a month on my period(boohoo).I am also losing a little slower than some others on the boards, but everybodys bodies are different. We did not all gain our weight the same rate so I assume we won't all be losing it at the same rate either. Leslie 264/227/130

Marcie - I have PCOS and had type 2 diabetes that was diet controlled before surgery. I quit taking Glucophage after I had my son. I avoid pills whenever I can. As for the weakness, I've got that now off and on and it's not blood sugar related...it's vitamin deficiencies. If you haven't had your labs drawn, ask to have them done now. I was low in thiamin, potassium and iron. It would be a good idea to have them checked. I found out thiamin helps process carbs and could be why I was losing so slowly too - so definitely see your doc about it. You shouldn't let it continue if you have a deficiency. Dina
