Well, I'm now a member of the century club. I have now lost 100 pounds since my surgery on 3/1/04. And that puts me down 124 since I started this journey in Novermber. I have another 120 to go, but I know I'm going to make it. I can't believe how much better I feel now, and how things like mowing the lawn are a joy compared to what it was before. In fact, not only did I mow my lawn, which is very large. I mowed my mother-in-laws which is just as big. Last year, I would have had to stop to rest my back many times just to get mine done. Now I whip right through it, and have energy to spare. Have faith Marchers, follow the pouch rules and you will do fine. For those of you who are in that 3-5 week area it will get much better.

First of all, Ken, huge congratulations to you! What an inspiration you are. Now, I know that men lose faster than women but help me out here. Can you share with the board a typical couple of days worth of eating, drinking (water) and exercise? I am very curious about your daily menu. Also, what type of exercise are you doing and how often? Again, hearty kudos to you. Thanks for your upbeat message. Best, Maureen

Maureen, Thank you for you message. I would be glad to share with you what I eat, but I really don't have a clear pattern or menu. I don't want to sound cavalier, but I don't chart as some do. I think that is great for some, but it doesn't work for me. I did chart my intake at first, but now that my doctor has cleared me to eat what I can tolerate, save the things we shouldn't eat, I no longer keep track of my intake. Basically, I watch my protein intake, get in 64 + ounces of fluid, excercise, and think positive thoughts. My usual day is to have a high protein breakfast, usually a scambled egg with cheese and some ham or hamburger. I eat some yougert around 10 in the morning. I eat the low carb type and it has 5 to 6 grams of protein. For lunch I tend to have leftovers from a prior evenings meal, some shrimp or cod, or I have found that there are some frozen dinners that are high in protein and low in sugar and carbs. I usually eat a protein bar at 2:00 pm. For dinner, I try to eat something high in protein. I may have side dishes, but I eat my protein first and if I have room I may have some of the side dishes. For instance tonight we went to Applebee's. I ordered the baby back ribs and shrimp. I had one rib and four of the small shrimp. My wife had my garlic potatoes and the veggies didn't get eaten. I'll have the leftovers tomarrow for lunch. I have a late snack, again some of high protein like cheese or some peanut butter on saltines. For liquids I have lots of water. I usually have a glass of sugar free Tang as soon as I get up. It is usually water through the day. I often drin**** tea before dinner, and then water until bed. For excercise I have a Aerodyne and I ride my mountain bike. I also do Tae Bo. Additionally, I am very active in my job, so I up and walking around quite a bit. I'm a insurance adjuster so I'm often climbing ladders and such. (This was a huge reason I had the surgery as my work was starting to suffer due to my weight). I try to exercise daily, but it averages four times a week. I just joined a gym, and I starting to lift weights as I am getting some excess skin around my arms and in my belly. The final point is that men do tend to lose faster, plus I had over 200 pounds to lose. Keep that in perspective, I have over 120 pounds to lose yet before I'm at goal. My intent of the post was just to say to all those who are where I was at five weeks ago to hang in there. It gets so much better and it is so worth it. I had some rough times, and I wondered what I had done to myself a couple of times. It hasn't been all roses, and even now I have things I don't tolerate well. I have finally learned what it means to be full. When I first got on real food, I often had a bite or two too much and I would get sick. I haven't had that happen for a few weeks now. We all have differant ways in our journey, just keep the faith and keep on track. You will make it, I know I'm going to.

Thanks for sharing what you are doing. YOu are obviously doing great. I think the key is you are drinking your water, getting lots of protein and moving. Also, you calorie intake is not going to be low with the food you are eating but it seems that is what we need. You have inspired me to up my calories and protein. I am going to really work at drinking my shakes and maybe eating a protein bar every day. I know that is what is lacking in my diet. Thanks!! Nicole

I do believe you are correct that the key for me is protein, water and exercise. But, while my caloric intake may be higher then some, I think I would be surprised how low it is if I really did chart it. Again, but I'm more into watching protein and carbs(sugars included) then calories. I don't tolerate shakes well. The protein bars I eat tend to be low in net carbs and have 20 or so grams of protein. I try to get 40 grams of protein a day in regular food, and the bars help me to get to 60 grams a day. And I also have to also point out again that I have a large amount to lose. For somebody who has a goal of 120 pounds to lose and they have lost 40, they only have 80 more to go. I want to lose 220, so I still have 120 to go. I really believe also that the mind has a huge role in how things go. I read a book called Preparing for Sugery, Healing Faster before my surgery and I think it helped in my recovery. I also think a positive attitude helps your body lose the weight. You can't just wi**** off, but in conjuction with everything else, I do think it helps. Good luck to all of you.

What's an aerodyne? Sounds like you're getting lots of good protein in every day, that one factor seems to be the critical key to success. Thanks so much for your thoughtful and thorough response to my questions! Keep up the great work! Best, Maureen
