Hi Marchers! I am 6 weeks and 2 days post op. I have lost 41 lbs. I have noticed that some people can eat bagels, cereal, sandwiches, and crackers. My doc says protein only and zero carbs. I am wondering ....if that is all I ate befor surgery, then I wouldn't have needed surgery. Why do so many docs have different plans? I don't eat enough to gain weight so why am I supposed to follow such a strict no carb diet? I have been very good so far, but I just can't see myself never having a sandwich or a bagel or a piece of toast for the rest of my life. Thanks for any input. Christie Inman 280/239/170

I am two months and 1 week out and I tried the bread deal with me I got so sick that I never want to see another piece of bread again. I think after 6 months you can eat bread again. I do sometimes treat myself to a cherry limeaid very raeley but I do do that just for a treat about once a month. You will be able to eat other things I think you can eat about 20 carbs a day. Just remember it was carbs that got us overweight so it is carbs that is going to have to tale us down. When I eat I only eat meat I don't have room for anything else I know I need veggies so sometimes I eat a salad. I hope this helps. I also buy low carb dressings ext. low carb control items help you a bunch. They carrie carb control ice cream also I don't eat it because I don't care for ice cream never did like it..The sugar free popsicles save my life...Sarah T

What I have learned is that its always protein first (of course) but when you get all that protein in you wont really have any room for carbs cuz you would be full on protein. So its more like fill on protein first and if you possibly can fit a carb in make sure it is a good carb. No white flours and white sugars that cause your cravings. More like fruit and veggies. I am sure having a sandwhich wont hurt as long as your protein is in there. I think carbs seem to be more of a (once in a while thing). Oh also my nutritionist said toast is easier to digest than non-toasted so if you do eat a sandwhich make sure its toasted Best of Luck to you! Elizabeth M -48lbs

Christie, My bariatric nutritonist (all she works with are bariatric patients and has done so for a long time now) says that at this stage not to worry about carbs, fat ect. just make sure the first thing you eat is protien, and keep your calorie intake between 300-500 per day. She said until you get close to your goal you cannot get in enough carbs, or fat to make a difference in your weight loss. She does however suggest the carbs be in fruits and veggies, but we are alowed to eat pasta if we want as long as we eat our protien first. She said to be wary of breads, not because of the carbs but because they will expand in our pouches and can make it very uncomfortable or possibly stretch them if you eat too much bread. A bite or two is no biggie, just eat slower so that the bread has time to expand so you get a true gage of how full you are. She also said that some people have problems with white bread because it can create little balls of bread in your pouch that and be difficult to have go through your stoma. Good luck, just make intellegent discisions based on what you can tolerate. Leslie

Christie, As you can read...each doctor DOES have their own opinion on how things work. My surgery was on March 27th and I do eat crackers, bread, pasta and SF cereal I have lost 41lbs too and feel great. I don't think your doctor won't let you eat carbs ever again. I found that some doctors rather wait til the 6 month mar****il they let you eat sugars/carbs. Like everyone said...protein is more important...but I'm sure eventually carbs will be back in your diet. Hang in there. Paola

Your docs orders will give you the fastest weight loss. My doc recently said that I needed to try to lose faster as the first 6 months are when you lose the most..and usually 1/2 the weight you will lose in total. I could eat anything but now am sticking to pro. Good luck. Louise -21 at 7 1/2 weeks post op
