I did not like the day that 3 other bariatric patients and I walked downstairs, via the elevators, to do the barium swallow study. I felt people were staring at us because all 4 of us were morbidly obese, all had I.V. poles we were dragging along and we were all in hosp. gowns. The hosp. is very small and we went down by the main lobby and people were staring. The hosp. is well known for its bariatric surgery floor. I felt people were thinking that we looked like elephants on parade. I just wanted to sink into the earth during this time. I felt ashamed that everybody knew that we had just had bariatric surgery. I also felt when I awoke from surgery that the staff did not give me pain med. before waking me up and when I did awaken I was in excrusiating pain to the point that I started to hyperventilate. That was an awful experience. I was crying and asking the nurses why they woke me up without giving me pain med. and they said because it is to hard to wake a pt. up who has been under anestesia. I have had previous surgeries in my life and I never woke up like that before. |

Besides the elephant parade episode and the initial waking out of anestesia, I felt the staff were very caring and very attentive to my needs. |

| I select the surgeon basically through convience of location and traveling time. He chose this hospital, and GLAD of that, I am. |

This hospital was on top of things, the nurses were not "over-worked" or didn't seem to be stretched too thin. The nurses at my local hospital seemed "disinterested', or not in it for caring about people. They just wanted to come when you pressed the button, whereas this hospital in Grand Haven would check in on you, not too often, but often enough. And if you felt like talking, they actually cared enough to share things about themselves and listen to you, too. I can't say enough for the Nurses: Holly, Teba, Kelly, Sandra, and Lynnette. And Beth down in PRE-op. If I forgot any of you, please forgive me. I was on morphine the first couple of days. |

The Nurses were Heaven Sent! The hospital seemed crisp, clean, and proud to be a caring facility, not just in it for the money. I loved my stay. It was wonderful. I'd go back there again. And get this: you didn't need ANYTHING> they provided it all for you on the first day. Tongs, deo., toothbrush, paste, shampoo, soap, a tv, and even a fan. I HAVE TO HAVE a fan. I didn't even have to remind them. It was already in the charts, bless their hearts. Chose them, if you can. It was a great experience. They get an A+++ from me. |

This is the hospital that Dr. Schram with Bariatric Treatment Centers uses. |

I have had many surgeries in much larger towns/hospitals. I have never had better care. We are talking excellent pain control, immediate call response and very fun, compassionate care. |

The entire wing is devoted to bariatric surgery. We walked every few hours and the respiratory therapist was a frequent guest. Bottom line - They do not want you to get sick or develop a blood clot. They want you healthy, in good pain control and motivated to the changes that are coming. A large three ring binder holds all the information you will need at discharge. Not to mention a cool drinking cup and pillow! |

The staff was incredible,(Teda, Jill, Beth, and the rest...) they honestly do what they can to help you and they make you feel like you are a real person and not just a "patient". Everything was set up for the overweight person, and I never felt out of place. |

The Bariatric staff was absolutely wonderful. They were right there if I needed help. There is a section of the hospital just for Bariatric patients, so we had our own staff. I would reccomend this hospital, staff, and surgeon (Dr. Schram) to anyone. |

Very knowledgeable staff that only takes care of bariatric patients. They were very caring.
I did have emergency surgery to remove a blocked bowel and they handled it very well. I wouldn't have gone anywhere else. |

| This is the facility that I was assigned to through Bariatric Treatment Centers. Unfortunately they no longer accept Blue Cross Blue Shied. What a shame. |

I can't say enough nice things about my stay at Ottawa Community Hospital. They are top notch. For a smaller facility I was very impressed. Staff was very caring a efficient. They were wonderful. I would recommend this facility to anyone without reservations. |

| I wanted a hospital with ICU capabilities in case of emergency. It was within 1 hour from my house and has passed Jhaco accredidation with flying colors. |

I am a nurse in a local hospital and the hospital itself was similar, but Bariatric Treatment Center owns a portion of rooms and equips them with their own oversized equipment and supplies. In that respect, this hospital exceeded my expectations |

I never had to wait for my call light to be answered, The nurses and Aides were there within seconds. They were supportive and consistant with care. Being a nurse myself, I was highly critical of the care, and they passed on every standard! |

| I went through Bariatric Specialists for my surgery and this was there participating hospital. |

There was a wing set off just for Bariatric patients only. The furniture was large enough so that you felt very comparable being there. The gowns were large for the bigger patients (very comfortable). |

The hospital staff were wonderful. They dealt with Bariatric patients only. They knew how to relate to a larger patient. Very caring and supporting staff. |

I thought North Ottawa Community Hospital was wonderful. Very clean, and they had the larger gowns, etc. so I never felt uncomfortable. Pain medication was there for the asking and the nurses were wonderful. My family was very comfortable there and everyone accomodated them. |

| NOCH was the hospital my surgeon, Dr. Jon Schram uses. |
| Competitors: |
Compared to the two major hospitals in South Bend, IN (Memorial and St. Joseph's), NOCH was much smaller - only two floors. It was very, very clean though and that was reassuring. |

Overall, I was very impressed with the North Ottawa Community Hospital. The rooms were very nice. I would rate the nursing staff as very good to excellent - the one exception being one of the night RN's gave me drinks with straws when apparently straws aren't to be used for several months. The LPN's (care practicioners)were excellent.
The one glaring weakness at North Ottawa for me was the use of one internist for all its bariatric patients. I don't think this doctor was fully aware of my specific needs. I don't blame the doctor necessarily, but recognize his case load for pre and post op patients was high. I do think that another internist should be used to dedicate more time individually to patients. |

They are very QUICK, you press your call light and honestly everytime (wich for me the pain was pretty bad) they walked right in the door. It was kinda unreal that they make sure they have the right amount of staff to do the job. |

They are located close to SW MI. They have Volunteers that will valet park your care and go out and get it, meeting you at the main entrance (FREE) The staff are quick - there doesn't appear to be a shortage at all. The place is quite but busy. Very Clean. The nicest I have stayed at! |

I've only been in two hosptials. This one was about average I would say. I think the accomodations could use a little updating as things looked pretty old. However, most of the nurses on teh BTC wing were very nice and helpful. I would also say patient because many of the patients were just unbelieveably uncooperative. |

Overall, I thought it was an ok place to be. It was clean although a little dated on the BTC wing. The beds were not in any way, shape, or form, even close to comfortable. The controls were in a spot you could barely reach and had to do blindly. A lot of times I ended up calling the nurse by accident. The nurses and doctors were very caring and understanding although they were insistent that you needed to do certain things. They kept on you if you didn't. Overall, I had to major complaints. |

I would recommend the hospital to anyone. The staff was wonderful and it was set up for wt loss surgery pt. They made my stay more comfortable both physically and emotionally. The staff is very knowledgable about the surgery and how to treat the pt after surgery. |
