I'm 4.5 yrs post gastric bypass and have an interest in researching this issue. I'm back in college(getting a BS in Psych and hoping to go to Grad school in Spring2010) and I'm actually writing a paper about the issue/possiblity of bulimia after WLS. Does anyone on this board have any thoughts on the subject?
FYI..I recently made my profile only visible to my friends, simply because I may not want all my peers and professors to be in on my entire journey at thsi point, but not to hide from any of you, so if you have an interest in seeing it just let me know.
My thoughts on bulimia are that I feel several people I've had contact with may have it or something similar, post WLS. They are binging and purging, knowing they will purge simply because their puch won't hold the food. Maybe that's not true bulimia, maybe it's a new eating disorder??? Just sharing some thoughts here as I get ready to write my paper. I've found 2 articles on the issue, one written in 2006 and another in 2003. One of them was done in Mexico though. So it's clear there is a NEED for this subject to be looked into and I think this site certainly would be a good place to start. I think WE are the experts....we ARE the ones living with this......I'm always shocked at some of the doctors and psych professionals opinions on what we KNOW. I hope WE can teach them a few things.
If anyone has an interest in this issue or even a personal experience to share, please comment or send me a private message. I'll keep it confidential. Tami

If it doesn't ease things I would call my surgeon 'cause it sounds like you possibly have a stricture. That is just a narrowing of the stoma.. No big deal..
Good Luck :) |

High protein does work! I have been doing since i found out that my i didn't have the rider on my insurance and i have lost 16 pounds in 2 months. How did i do it? I just cut out all the bad carbs. Like all the processed ones-potatoes, pasta, white bread, and replaced them with lots of veggies, meats, cheeses, nuts, fiber one bars, low-carb yogurts, sugar free pudding, jello, lots of water. Stay away from caffefine! Good Luck to everyone that tries it. Just stay low-carb you don't have to go extreme as atkins. Just look at your carbs and subtract your dietary fiber from your carbs and that's how much carbs you have digest. Also, pay attention to your sugars! |

Cottage Cheese, Pudding, V-8 juice, Gatorade, Soft boiled eggs. All soft foods, and then sometimes is hard to swallow it. Seems in my 3-5 months is was much better. Now its like blah.. wonder if you can get a stricture, so late after surgery? |

First.....take a deep breath!! You WILL lose the weight! No worries!! Honest!! You couldn't do anything wrong at this point in the game, if you wanted to!!! You're gonna lose, lose ,lose, without any problems for at least the first 6 to 9 months, if not for a full eighteen months!
What is happening is this- You've just had MAJOR surgery! Your body has been through the wringer and it's resting. Taking a small break. This is called a "pause". (if this goes on for several months, then it might be a "plateau", but this happening at 3 weeks out is highly unlikely) Let your body rest!! It needs it.
Keep doing what your doc told you to do. Water, protein , walking. Your weight loss will kick in again. I promise! I had many "pauses" and a few "plateau's" all the way down to goal, and I'm sure you won't be any different, cause we all do it. It's just part of the crazy ride, you signed up for! I know it's frustrating and worrisome, but just keep on, keeping on and it will all work out! You'll start dropping again, as soon as your body has "rested" enough.
Keep coming on here and ask questions, we're all here for you.....Have a great afternoon! |

I did the 5DPT a few months ago and was really surprised at my lack of hunger during the first two days of liquids...I did it because I had become what I thought was overly hungry and quite the snacker, just grazing like crazy. I am planning to do it again next week. The one thing I found that really helped was the Ham & Split Pea Soup recipe that I found on the web. They have several recipes for soup that you can use while doing the 5DPT, but since I like Split Pea soup anyway that was right up my alley.
As far as protein goes...I use EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control (liquid Form) Chocolate Fudge. It has 110 calories -17gr of protein a 2g net carbs. It comes it Vanilla, Chocolate Fudge and Strawberry, but I like the Chocolate better. I usually purchase it 2 cases at a time from Sam's Club or BJ's, but when I low on funds I purchase the 4-pk from Walmart it usually runs about $4.97. I also buy the large container of Body Fortress Vanilla Whey Protein, and I also have Chocolate. Even at almost 2 yrs out I still use quite a bit of protein mainly I think because I like the taste and find it convenient to use.
Hope this information helps, and good luck with the 5DPT...if I can do it (ole greedy gut) anybody can do it.

your not alone iam 1 year out and I too have lost 100 pounds but have put on 10 pounds in the last few months due to snacking on carbs that just slide right down.. even if I know it will give me a stomach ache i still eat it and deal with the 20 minutes of pain.. why I dont know.. my sugar dips low too and I think thats when i really crave the sugar more.. My DR told me to eat more protein, like cheese sticks and other things that have high protein content I thought I was doing a good thing eating cottage cheese but that is considered a slider food, I went on the computer and found a page called the 5 day pouch diet and it took it back to basics like back when the pouch was new starting with just protein drinks , and on from there it also had recipes to try too. I really got to try it again.. http://livingafterwls.blogspot.com/2007/08/five-day-pouch-test.html Hope this helps, also try posting a old picture of yourself somewhere so if you see it you may think twice about reaching for that fattening food.. holly |

I have been having the fear that my pouch has stretched way out of shape from me eating the carbs i have been eating.
