Just curious. How long after surgery can you have a little alcohol?

Some docs say never - most say wait at least 6 months - all docs warn about transfer addiction - or they should.    Susan

My surgeon told me that never.  It would make me dump and to be honest I had the experience of dumping once and I am not going there again if I can help it.  Take care.  Tracy

My post surgical paperwork state 4 weeks post op no alcohol.  I will not lie, I have had a couple of drinks.  To be honest, if I get an upset stomach I will drink a small weak SoCo and Cranberry, and it actually settles my stomach.  I actually keep this in my home now and I was never one to keep liquor in my house.

I found this out when me and hubby split up for a week and my sister talked me into going out with her and having a drink.  I didn't want to go, but I ended up giving in.  I only sip sip sipped, but I can't believe how smoothly the drink went down and how much it had settled my upset stomach that night.

I would definitely recommend if you are going to have a drink, please be careful.  You might want to check with your doc, but definitely stay away from beer due to carbonation!

I never thought to check with my doc regarding the alcohol because it was in my discharge instructions!?!?  That's really confusing...  wouldn't my discharge papers have been written by my surgeon being as I was a surgical patient being released???

Cool Thanks! My paperwork does not say a thing. But I am going to double check it just incase. It's my Birthday later this month but some of my friends want to take me out the 16th and I would love to have a little to drink.

I have heard that it does not take much to get lit. Is that true?

My doctor said to wait a year. I did that - and started VERY slow. I also did it at home (in case something weird happened - like dumping or extreme intoxication from the very small amount). It was ok - but I was a year out.
Be careful - You said your friends want to take you out on the 16th - "out" is dangerous. You will not be at home, and don't know what you drink - but if it's mixed with anything there are a lot of sugar and carbs in mixes and that could affect you very hard!
I would suggest you try it at home first (if you must have a drink on the 16th) - just to see how it is going to affect you. Either that - or stick to water on the 16th and watch everyone else get drunk. Sometimes people watching can be just as much fun!

Yes, it must be, because if I have 2 drinks I've got a pretty good buzz.  I have a wedding this weekend and I will have only a couple of drinks... I am lucky enough to not have an addictive personality, and I'm not much of a drinker, nor have I ever been.  My hubby is a drinker and gets angry at me all the time because I don't go out with him.

Not to mention I have classes starting back up in 3 weeks and won't have time to drink...LOL  I refuse to drink alcohol and allow it to ruin my GPA.  I may not have had much to be proud of when it comes to my weight, but I'm very proud of my 3.90 GPA.  I have 51 credits so far and only need 11 more credits for my Associate of Business Administration.  I am striving to graduate Summ *** Laude!  I have enrolled in 9 credit hours this semester and keep thinking that I should just go ahead and take one more class to get it over with.  The college told me that I do not have to attend December 19th commencement this year, that as long as I wait until after commencement to apply for graduation, that I can have the June 09 commencement.  I want the NEW ME to cross the stage, not to mention I want to have a party and be able to dance, dance, dance all night!!

You are so early out ... just a month.... better wait.  have a drink... of water ... with lemon... that will do you good.

Remember that alsohol is being "digested" by a liver, and your liver has already hard time trying to kepp you alive after the surgery.  All the drugs being pumped into you, now you are losing weight, and again the liver has to work really hard.... so support your liver.. you not drink yet

Same thing, dr worried about addition to it but said small amounts where ok 6 months out. I've not had addiction problems but have had 2 small drinks since surgery and I'm 17 months out,. Don't feel the need to drink to "fit in" now because I'm so different now, who cares

hi, i was wondering this cuestion for a long time 2. my dr. told me to wait 6 months. but.
when i was 4 months out i start having 1 glass of wine ones in a while. it was ok. and last week was my 6 month surgeversay and i went out to a bar with some friends i had 4 coktails it was awesome i did not get sick at all. i was drinking like before surgery. no problem just be careful if you dump. `cuz the sugar on the coktails. and if you are gonna have vodka or something like that don´t drink it with soda or carbonated drinks. have it with some natural flavored water. or ice té.
but don´t drink to much is not good for us. or for anybody. LOL.
    take care.

My surgeon & nut say not to but I had my first drink at 4 months post-op and promptly passed out after 1/2 glass of wine.  Now, I get an easy buzz from a glass of wine or 1 bottle of beer.  I have it often though but only at home as I don't like to be in public when intoxicated.   Be careful and as with just about everything...try it at home first;.
